USA NEWS TODAY: A fresh drone video captured this week reveals a sprawling invasion of seaweed along Miami Beach, marking an unwelcome sight for beachgoers hoping for pristine sands.
The aerial footage, filmed Wednesday by Tony of @tonedrone, showcases thick mats of Sargassum seaweed blanketing the shoreline, creating a natural barrier between sunbathers and the ocean. Despite the dense accumulation, some determined visitors could be seen braving the conditions to enjoy the beach.
On social media, users quickly dubbed the scene a “seaweed takeover,” posting videos and lamenting the surprising sight at one of America’s most iconic beach destinations.
Scientists had already warned this could be a heavy year for seaweed in the Atlantic. In a December 2024 report, researchers at the University of South Florida noted “relatively high amounts of Sargassum in the tropical Atlantic,” raising concerns that much of it could drift toward the Caribbean and Florida coasts by spring 2025.

While Sargassum plays a vital ecological role, offering food and shelter for marine species, large buildups can present serious challenges on land. As it decomposes, the seaweed releases gases that contribute to foul odors and may worsen respiratory problems for sensitive individuals, according to health officials.
